Best of 2014

For the last two editions of The Other Woman on Amazing Radio for 2014 it was all about our Best Songs of the year.

It’s a toughie and trust me, blood, sweat and tears have been shed over these. Part one featured some of the bands who also delivered kick ass live shows in 2014, Swedish duo Wildbirds and Peacedrums who, quite frankly, can do no wrong and the inimitable Sharon Van Etten. Both released wonderful albums in 2014 too. From those big hitters we also take in Blood of the Bull, a young Glasgow based musician releasing with tiny indie (and firm TOW favourite) Soft Power Records. It’s early days for her but Bend Over is 1:59 minutes of sheer joy.

We also dipped into our sessions archive for a stunner from Gabby Young and newbies on the block Eliza Shaddad and Hannah Lou Clark make an appearance. Sheffield songstress Nat Johnson’s album has also made the grade along with Bunty who released the most colourful song of 2014, if that’s even possible.

The first show of 2015 was a look ahead show, which are always tough. Who knows who’s going to make it at any time in this crazy business. At Amazing Radio we sometimes tip people about two years too early.

We decided to make 2015’s first show about those bands we’d like to see do well in 2015 and leave the rest to fate. The moody looking young lasses in the picture are Skinny Girl Diet, an awesome London DIY teen girl punk outfit who’ve lately been picked out by cooler-than-thou magazine Dazed as one’s to watch.

We had them in session in 2013, obviously!

It would be ace to see Nadine Shah sky rocket to greatness with album number two and Marika Hackman deserves every shred of hype surrounding her debut offering. We also threw in some noisy garage goodness from Bristol too in the shape of Milk Teeth and Hysterical Injury. It’s a well intentioned and well thought out stab in the dark and it’s our start to the New Year.
